New global center for constructive journalism opens in Melbourne

Today marks the official opening of the Constructive Institute Asia Pacific Hub at the Faculty of Arts, Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. The hub, led by Director Kate Torney, will serve as a regional centre for advancing constructive journalism across Asia and the Pacific.

From Denmark to the Asia Pacific, the momentum for constructive journalism is growing. Monash’s launch of the Constructive Institute Asia Pacific Hub marks a powerful step forward in our shared mission to rebuild trust and renew journalism’s role in democratic life. The Asia Pacific Hub will fill a critical gap in our global capacity to research and deliver constructive journalism. It will generate region-specific data and insights, tailored to the diverse audiences and media landscapes of Australia, Asia, and the Pacific.,” says Torney.

Building on the Constructive Institute’s global mission, Torney and her team at Monash University will explore how constructive journalism can be tailored to the diverse media landscapes of Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, New Zealand, and beyond.

Chairman of the Constructive Institute in Denmark welcomes the new CI Asia Pacific Hub:

“Democracy  needs journalism more than ever. But the news industry needs to rethink the journalistic role in order to remain a trusted and relevant for citizens. The vision of constructive journalism spreads rapidly around the world, and at the board of the Mothership of the constructive global movement we are grateful and proud to partner up with Monash University and the media community Down Under to help journalism help democracy,”

Jean Phillip De Tender, media director and deputy director of European Broadcasting Union (EBU)

Support from Denmark

Back in the spring, Kate Torney spent a couple of months at the Constructive Institute in Aarhus, Denmark, gaining first-hand experience in how constructive journalism is taught and applied. Now ready to lead the implementation of these practices at Monash University. Founder and CEO of the Constructive Institute Ulrik Haagerup are looking forward to the collaboration between the countries.

“By offering credible, future-focused reporting, journalists can re-engage audiences and help rebuild trust in democracy at a time when facts and truth are scarce resources. From Denmark we stand ready to support the new Asia Pacific Hub, and I personally look forward to visiting and strengthening this global collaboration,” says Ulrik Haagerup, Founder and CEO of the Constructive Institute.

Founded in 2017 in Aarhus, Denmark, the Constructive Institute is an independent centre at the heart of the global constructive journalism movement. Its mission has always been to support journalism in strengthening democracy and reshaping the global news culture.

With today’s launch of the Constructive Institute Asia Pacific Hub, Monash University and the Constructive Institute take a major step forward in equipping students, researchers and newsrooms across the region to embrace constructive journalism as a way of meeting the challenges of modern news media.
