Constructive Journalism Study Tour – Scandinavia

In October 2024, 29 journalists from 14 Eastern European countries joined our Constructive Journalism Study Tour to learn more about how they can use constructive journalism in their own context.

Here are some of the key takeaways from the Study Tour.

A few highlights from the evaluation

The tour was extremely well organized, the leaders were professional and very friendly, we managed to visit many important newsrooms in Scandinavia, benefiting from their experience, but above all, we understood in depth what constructive journalism means and how it serves democracy.

Learning about Constructive Journalism has been as a second Lasik eye surgery, making me see the world and the news in a different way. It is not just happy news, it goes further than that, raising questions about solutions, finding answers, checking about facts to confirm them, be critical about them and bringing something different to the table to our audience, our society.

I believe that every journalist working in the media industry today should be given the opportunity to learn about constructive journalism. Training tours like this are the best way to provide them with this knowledge, and I highly recommend everyone to participate in such programs.

Monday October 7th

Constructive Journalism conference on board the DFDS ship to Oslo.

Tuesday October 8th

Visit to the Nobel Peace Prize Center to learn about their communication strategy and the role of journalism in the process of covering conflicts in the world.
Visit to VG with Espen Egil Hansen.

Wednesday October 9th

Visit to NRK, the Norwegian public service tv-station that has made constructive journalism an integrated part of the newsroom.
Meet with editors and journalists who has been working with constructive journalism in all levels of the newsroom, including covering climate change.

Thursday October 10th

Visit to Swedish Television (SVT) and to Swedish Radio (SR) to learn from their experiences with working with constructive journalism.
Visit to Gap Minder and workshop on showing the correct picture of the factual development of the world.

Friday October 11th

Visit to the Danish business newspaper, Børsen. How to do include constructive journalism in the daily coverage of business stories.
Visit to the Danish newspaper, Politiken.
Visit to the journalistic start up, Zetland, that started from scratch and zero seven years ago and now have more than 40.000 subscribers, more than most newspapers in the country, and that has constructive journalism as part of the newsroom culture.
