A better future for local journalism – TrygFonden and Constructive Institute continue the partnership on strengthening democracy.

With a new agreement that runs until 2027, TrygFonden and Constructive Institute will continue the collaboration of the two organizations to create a more constructive public conversation and strengthen national and local democratic development in Denmark.

TrygFonden has been an invaluable partner since the foundation of Constructive Institute in 2017, and is one of the main reasons why constructive journalism is now spreading not only in Denmark but all over the world, where nuanced, inspiring and engaging journalism is now called a mega trend in the media industry, says Founder of Constructive Institute, Ulrik Haagerup, who is very grateful that the TrygFonden has decided to extend the partnership for an additional three years.

Project manager Peter Pilegaard Hansen from TrygFonden comments on the agreement; – We are happy to be able to continue the collaboration with Constructive Institute and support the good work of making the public debate – and especially the local debate – more solution-oriented, constructive and close to citizens where it’s needed.

The partnership enables the following three projects at Constructive Institute.

Supporting local journalism

Constructive Institute will implement a number of local media projects that will help media engage citizens in local and regional areas for more active participation in local democracy. This project builds on a pilot project that was carried out in 2022-2023 in collaboration with local newspapers  Herning Folkeblad, Midtjyllands Avis and Skive Folkeblad.

Two fellowships to strengthen local journalism

The fellows enroll in Constructive Institute’s 10-month fellowship program to improve their journalistic skills. The goal is to find news way to make local and regional journalism within their media organizations and with a view to support local democracy.

A fellowship with a focus on one of the strategic focus areas at the TrygFonden

Constructive Institute is establishing a fellowship with a focus on one of TrygFonden’s strategic focus areas. One example could be a focus on how to develop the potential of children and young people, a better and safer live for adults and elderly people, or how to strengthen the framework for safe societies.

Overall during the period 2023 – 2027 TrygFonden will provide a support to Constructive Institute of four million DKK annually.
