How We Work

The institute works towards changing the industry in three interdependent ways. By collecting and distributing new knowledge we push forward new inspiration through our conferences, workshops and the award. We foster new role models through our international fellowship program and in this proces create global ambassadors for change across the profession. This section adresses the latter.

The Constructive Institute Fellowship Program

The program aims to give talented media professionals, with a potential to influence the future of journalism, access to an academic bank of knowledge at a top class university for the duration of an academic year.

When and Where
10 Months

The fellowship program runs for a full academic year of 10 months, starting in the last week of August and finishing at the end of June.

Based in Aarhus

All fellows are expected to spend the majority of the time in Aarhus, with the exception of academic school holidays. The main working language of the fellows will be English.

The Structure of the Program

The Constructive Institute Fellowship Program is modelled after journalism fellowship programs at Stanford University in San Francisco and at Harvard University in Boston. The program aims to give talented media professionals, with a potential to influence the future of journalism, access to an academic bank of knowledge at a top class university for the duration of an academic year.

Not Just Another Fellowship

We take pride in other people describing us as

  • 1/3 Stanford – because we are close to the industry and focused on  innovation
  • 1/3 Humboldt – because we are close to the academia and the latest knowledge
  • 1/3 People High School – because we embody the spirit of the traditional Danish Folk High School focused on giving participants new perspective and connections with a focus on curiosity, philosophy, politics, music, joy and community.

Fellows take part in daily conversations with academics, politicians, media people and start up CEOs exploring ideas on; media, democracy, mindset changes and innovation in The CI Fellowship Lounge. The guitar, the coffee machine, the corner couches and the national songbook are essential for the intimate and innovative atmosphere..

Funding for Danish Fellowships

In the academic year of 2023/2024, the Constructive Fellowship Programme, in association with Aarhus University, will give access to 8 Danish fellows, financed by TrygFonden, Novo Nordisk Foundation, William Demant Foundation and Danish Industry Foundation.

Funding for International Fellowships

International media professionals interested in taking part of the program may still apply. However, as we do not yet have the international funding in place, the accepted fellows are expected to provide their own funding. They may turn to outside funding sources, such as foundations, civic groups, or national organisations.
